About the National Livestock Mission 2022

The Government of India’s Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairy Industry launched a National Livestock Mission in 2014-15. Through this mission, jobs will be created by developing entrepreneurship and increasing productivity per animal, which will contribute to increased production of meat, goat’s milk, eggs and wool. The excess output will increase export earnings after domestic demand has been met. This program was created to develop the entrepreneurs to create the forward and backward link for the product available in the unorganized sector and to connect the unorganized sector to the organized sector. An increase in per capita productivity is achieved through breeding improvement.

The promotion of skill-based education and the dissemination of technologies to reduce production costs and improve animal husbandry are carried out. Apart from that, the establishment of feed processing units would be encouraged to narrow the gap between supply and demand.

Target of the National Livestock Mission

The main goal of the National Livestock Mission is to create jobs through the development of entrepreneurship in the small ruminant, poultry, pig and feed sectors. This program focuses on increasing productivity per animal, which is achieved through breeding improvement. Apart from this, the production of meat, eggs, goat milk, wool and fodder is also increased. This system will also ensure the availability of fodder and forage to significantly reduce demand. The establishment of feed processing plants is encouraged to reduce the gap between supply and demand. Risk management measures are in place, including livestock insurance for farmers. Applied research is also funded in priority areas.
